Golden Milk Paste

Golden Milk has ancient origins in India and Ayurvedic medicine. The health benefits of its main ingredient, turmeric, range from anti-inflammatory to antioxidant.

It's also delicious! The earthy, faintly spicy flavor of turmeric gains some balance when combined with sweet cinnamon and cardamom and spicy ginger and black pepper.

Making a batch of Golden Milk paste to store in the fridge makes it that much easier to quickly whip up a cup of Golden Milk whenever you want. Suspending the spices in coconut oil makes the brew smoother and leaves less sludge than simply stirring the spice blend into milk. (Although, make no mistake, there is still some sludge!)

Makes about 1/2 cup paste.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Oaktown Spice Shop Golden Milk

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons honey or sweetener, to taste

Directions

  1. Combine spices and water in a saucepan and whisk to combine. Add coconut oil and bring to a simmer, then simmer for 3-4 minutes, whisking constantly. Let cool, then whisk in honey or sweetener of choice.
  2. Store the paste in a clean jar. It will keep in the fridge for about 3 months.
  3. For Golden Milk, gently heat a cup of milk of choice. Whisk in 1-2 teaspoons of paste.

This is the only Golden Milk I will drink. I put a heaping teaspoon of golden milk powder into hot water and add 1 tsp honey and 2 tablespoons of pumpkin spice creamer. Just delicious! I’ll start adding a tsp of the coconut oil next.

    Hi Lisa!

Thank you for your question. Our Golden Milk blend uses our Alleppey Turmeric. We suggest coconut milk because fat is an essential part of what makes curcumin (the anti-inflammatory chemical in turmeric) available for our bodies to absorb. Its flavor also compliments the beverage. It should be okay to substitute with ghee, butter, or neutral oil, though.

I hope this helps, and happy cooking!

    Warmly,

I too would like to know which exact turmeric you use, and also why you use coconut oil instead of a healthier choice.

Received my order of Oaktown Spice Golden Milk mix today. I’ve never tasted Golden milk so I prepared it as instructed and it’s delicious!!

Sorry to disagree about the virgin olive oil. That would add flavor to the paste that I think would compete with the nuance of all the spices. I would suggest any sort of healthy non-flavorful oil. Grapeseed does sound good to me. The honey is a preservative and I think it’s important to remember that.

Curious why Erika suggested Olive Oil. Maybe I’m missing something.

I will be serving Oaktown Spice Golden Milk at my Health & Hiking Poles Weekend Retreat at Point Reyes. It’s a healthy way to start the day!
I mix the paste with 2/3 water and 1/3 Calafia Farms Toasted Coconut Milk and it’s YUMMY.
